Spectrum Floors’ New Eco-Friendly Rubber Alternative
At Spectrum Floors, we’re committed to championing environmental responsibility in the industry. As such, we’re excited to introduce GAIA, the culmination of our eco-design method. GAIA is now available for Rubber Flooring, in the Uni and Kayar ranges, with other styles expected to follow in the coming months.
Thanks to GAIA, we’ve achieved an impressive 60% reduction of cradle-to-grave Global Warming Potential (GWP) by replacing conventional ingredients with environmentally conscious alternatives. Discover how we accomplished this below:
1. Bio Attributed Oil
By removing rubber produced with non-renewable resources, such as petroleum-based rubber, and replacing it with rubber that is largely produced using certified bio-based oils coming from plants or seeds, we have reduced dependency on petroleum-based non-renewable resources and minimised environmental impact.
2. Recycled Calcium Carbonate
When using recycled calcium carbonate derived from marble waste instead of quarried virgin calcium carbonate we are giving life to a by-product, reducing the need for new extraction and consequently, soil erosion and water pollution.
3. Rice Husks Silica
We have traded traditional silica, acquired through a resource-intensive extraction process, for silica acquired from rice husks, repurposing the discarded waste from rice cultivation without affecting the food chain. This allows for a substantial reduction of resource-intensive extraction, reducing ecosystem disruption and biodiversity loss.
4. Bottom Layer Free of Added Pigments
By removing pigments responsible for high GWP in our bottom layer, and replacing it with our inventive new bottom layer free of added pigments, we minimise environmental impacts. While this change is not visible to the installed product, it guarantees that product performance remains unaffected.
5. Recycling In-House Waste Material
We are stopping material waste by incorporating pre- and post-processed raw compounds into our flooring products, such as grinded offcuts and trimmings.
At Spectrum Floors, we boast 40 years of experience, supplying a range of quality products sourced from leading European and other international manufacturers.
